KDU Symposium on ‘Sharing Knowledge for Sustainable Peace’ Inaugurated
The third annual symposium, organized by General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University (KDU) for the express purpose of ‘Sharing Knowledge for Sustainable Peace’ among researchers and scholars got underway Friday (20) morning at the KDU auditorium with the participation of Secretary to HE the President, Secretary Defence, Tri-service chiefs and a host of other distinguished guests.The full-day symposium, designed to further promote the intellectual capacity for Sri Lanka Army, Navy and Air Force officers providing exceptional expertise, derived from diverse scholars in numerous related fields, was to present separate papers and articles, related to national defence strategies.
The inaugural ceremony commenced soon after the KDU anthem rent the air, to be followed by KDU Vice Chancellor Major General M P Peiris’ welcome address. The keynote address on the occasion was delivered by Mr Lalith Weeratunga, Secretary to HE the President.
Mr Gotabaya Rajapaksa, Secretary Defence contributed to the inaugural session making a few observations and comments as the technical sessions in the symposium were to follow afterwards.
“When I was a serving officer in the Army, intelligence reports received from Tamil Nadu confirmed that Tiger terrorists were undergoing training and some of them were entering Sri Lanka in batches from Tamil Nadu. Unfortunately, due to misunderstanding that prevailed between Sri Lanka and India at that point of time, nothing was possible. It is worth enough to research and find out how spares and parts of those artillery guns, weapons, explosives and aircraft were smuggled into Sri Lanka. For the benefit of the region, maritime security has to be strengthened and given priority,” Mr Gotabaya Rajapaksa said.
Mr Rajapaksa also recalled how personal freedom in some of the Western countries works and restrictions placed on free movement among civilians. He also noted that personal freedom should not in anyway become a bar to national security concerns.
Mr Rajapaksa also had the chance of catching a glimpse of the new construction models, planned for the KDU in the near future when invited by university authorities.
The gamut of academic papers that were taken up for discussion during those sessions in the aftermath of the ceremonial inauguration covered “Environmental aspects towards sustainable peace”, “Social Science for Social Harmony”, “Defence Studies”, “Technology for Sustainable Peace” and “Challenges in the Field of Medicine”. Mrs W C D K Fernando, Symposium Chairperson, Faculty of KDU Academic Studies raised the vote of thanks at the inauguration ceremony.
Selected academic papers forwarded to the symposium are to be published in the KDU defence journal, ‘Defence Academia’ after the symposium. The KDU, founded in 1980 with the specific purpose of inculcating service officers with an academic background has so far produced thousands of Army, Navy, Air Force and Police officers. The KDU, now recognized as one of the unique Defence Universities in the South Asian Region is to extend its academia covering a wide range of fields in the future too, while grooming officers to meet the challenges of modern defence management.

CPI(M) legislator denies leaking ceasefire details to Vaiko
Communist Party of India (Marxist) legislator K. Mahendran on Sunday denied reports that he was involved in the 2009 leak of details about the ceasefire proposed by India to end the war between Sri Lanka and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE).
Rejecting the claims of the former LTTE international spokesperson, Kumaran Pathmanathan alias KP, that he had conveyed the information to Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) general-secretary Vaiko, Mr. Mahendran said he never had any ties either with the LTTE or its political commissar P. Nadesan.
“When the Sri Lankan Tamils were subjected to untold miseries, the CPI(M) demanded a political solution through talks. We have been demanding autonomy for Tamil areas,” Mr. Mahendran said, stressing that his party was never in agreement with the LTTE's approach.
Mr. Pathmanathan, in an interview to the Sri Lanka-based newspaper DailyMirror, had said though Mr. Nadesan had been “advised not to leak the details of the move to people like [Tamil Nationalist Movement leader] P. Nedumaran and Mr. Vaiko, he had, at one point, consulted Mr. Mahendran, the Tamil Nadu Legislator from the CPI(M).”
Mr. Pathmanathan further said that since the CPI(M) was an ally of the MDMK (in the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam-led alliance), Mr. Mahendran had leaked the details.
According to Mr. Pathmanathan, LTTE sympathisers in the Dravida Munnettra Kazhagam (DMK) such as Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi's daughter Kanimozhi, along with Catholic priest Jegath Gaspar Raj, had negotiated with Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram a possible ceasefire.
Mr. Pathmanathan's argument was that Mr. Chidambaram came up with the ceasefire idea because AIADMK supremo Jayalalithaa had taken a pro-LTTE stand and the DMK-Congress combine was worried about losing the elections.
“He wanted the LTTE to issue a unilateral statement with two main points. One, to agree to silence arms and surrender them in due course and the other, to accept a political settlement as an alternative to the Tamil Eelam,” Mr. Pathmanathan told D.B.S. Jeyaraj, an expert on Sri Lankan Tamil affairs, in an interview.

Claiming that Mr. Chidambaram himself “unofficially” drafted the statement for the LTTE, Mr. Pathmanathan said a guarantee was given that New Delhi would exert pressure on Colombo.

Sri Lanka revives silk route with new seaport to enhance ties with Middle East
New port is expected to relieve pressure on colombo
Abu Dhabi Sri Lanka is reviving the historic silk route, which was used by Arabs to explore Asia with the opening of a new seaport in southern Hambantota last week, according to the Sri Lankan Ambassador to the UAE.
Reviving the silk route means it will greatly benefit the Middle East, Sarath Wije Singhe said at a discussion meeting at the Sri Lankan Embassy in Abu Dhabi recently.
Sri Lanka unveiled the Hambantota seaport yesterday, which was built with Chinese assistance as part of a $6 billion (Dh22.04 billion) drive to rebuild infrastructure after the war.
Attract business
The government hopes the port will get business from some of the 36,000 ships that cross the Indian Ocean each year. The first ships will arrive in November.
Sri Lanka has been maintaining trade links with the Middle East for thousands of years and the ‘revival of the Silk Route’ will help the ships from the region, especially the UAE, the ambassador told Gulf News on the sidelines of the meeting.
“We want closer relations with the Middle East, Russia, China and India than the West,” he said.
Dr Priyantha Gunaratna, Marine Projects Specialist, Coastal Zone and Waterways Management Section at Dubai Municipality made a presentation on the project.
A port free zone which will come up soon as part of the project will also give opportunities for investors from the Middle East, he told Gulf News.
A port was first known to be operational in the general area of Hambantota around 250BC, when Chinese and Arabian merchants used it as part of the maritime silk route, according to his presentation.
Sri Lanka is situated along the key shipping route between the Malacca Straits and the Suez Canal, which links Asia and Europe.
The only existing major port in Sri Lanka, the Port of Colombo is catered towards container handling and is unable to provide facilities for port-related industries and services.
The new port will help relieve pressure on the Colombo port, and also provide services to ships that normally take three-and-a-half-day detours from their shipping lanes to receive these services, including refuelling, maintenance, logistics and buying provisions and medical supplies.
The Hambantota Port is being constructed by the Chinese companies China Harbour Engineering Company and Sinohydro Corporation.
The total cost of the first phase of the project is estimated at $360 million, including $76.5 million for the bunker terminal.
Ahead of schedule
About 85 per cent of the funding is provided by the Chinese Government and the remaining 15 per cent by the Sri Lanka Ports Authority.
The project is currently five months ahead of schedule, and is scheduled to be completed by November.
A $550 million tax-free port zone is being set up with local and international companies expressing interest in shipbuilding, ship-repair and warehousing facilities.
The project is expected to provide employment to over 50,000 people.

The Chinese funding for the Hambantota Port will not affect Sri Lanka’s relations with India, Dr Priyantha Gunaratna told Gulf News. India is already helping Sri Lanka to build an airport, he said. Chinese help is similar in nature, Gunaratna said.

The Sri Lankan government has said the ever-deepening ties with China are purely commercial. But the media reports said that some geopolitical analysts speculated that this port’s future phases might afford Beijing a naval facility, a prospect that worries Sri Lanka’s close neighbour and major benefactor, India.

The $600 million (Dh2.2 billion) second phase of the Port of Hambantota project will include a container terminal, which will be completed by 2014, according to the presentation made by Dr Priyantha Gunaratna. The third phase will include a dockyard.
Upon completion, the port will cover 4,000 acres of land and accommodate 33 vessels at any given time, making it the second largest port in South Asia.
The construction of the Port of Hambantota is part of a larger development project centered around the Hambantota District.
Apart of the port, the project consists of the construction of an international airport, a highway, a railway, an oil refinery and related facilities.
The new airport will initially handle cargo related to the port, with plans for later expansion.
Related to the project, a 500-acre Safari Park is being constructed in Ridiyagama, Ambalantota scheduled to be open in 2011.
An international cricket stadium is also under construction in the area, and will host two fixtures at the upcoming 2011 World Cup.

Former Head of Sri Lanka's Peace Secretariat blames opposition leader for CFA failure
Aug 23, Colombo: Former head of Sri Lanka's Peace Secretariat Professor Rajiva Wijesinha giving evidence before the Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission Monday said that the ceasefire agreement (CFA) of 2002 was a good idea, but was a failure mainly due to then Prime Minister Ranil Wickremasinghe's inability to integrate it.
Prof. Wijesinha had said that actions of opposition leader and many officials, who were engaged in the CFA process, benefited the LTTE noting one such instance where the Peace Secretariat had provided money to the LTTE.
"The Government wasn't interested in monitoring what was done with the money that was provided. The general lack of monitoring allowed the LTTE to run riot," local Daily Mirror quoted Wijesinha.
Unlike former Presidents Ranasinghe Premadasa and Chandrika Kumaranatunga, Ranil Wickremasinghe failed to realize his mistakes of being completely used by the LTTE, Wijesinha pointed out.
"His na�ve and culpable actions during the ceasefire period turned the CFA a betrayer of all the Tamil leaders who stood against the LTTE," he has added.

Four persons have surrendered to courts over the recent assault of the head of Inland Revenue office in Matara.They gave themselves up, through a lawyer, to the Matara chief magistrate today (Aug. 23) and were remanded until September 09.Police are searching for a close associate of a politician of the area in connection with the assault.Tax officers are staying away from field duties to protest the manhandling of deputy tax commissioner H.M. Denzil on August 11.A large police contingent is in Matara at present to arrest those responsible for the attack.Police chief Mahinda Balasuriya is also in the area giving instructions to his officers.(Combo Today)
President on an inspection tour to Sigiriya
President Mahinda Rajapaksa visited the Sigiriya rock fortress this morning (August 23) to inspect the current state of the damage caused to the frescoes.He was accompanied by Minister of Cultural Affairs Pavithra Wanniarachchi and ministry officials.A report on the current state of the frescoes was handed over to President Rajapaksa on August 20.Meanwhile, Dr. Senarath Dissanayake, Director General of Archaeology, says that foreign specialists will be brought in to examine the white stains that have appeared on the Sigiriya frescos. The Director General also said that a team of local specialists have already started inspecting the frescos and is currently running several tests at Sigiriya. President Mahinda Rajapaksa has ordered IGP Mahinda Balasuriya to remove cut-outs depicting him at unwanted places. If cut-outs are found in unwanted places the police would be held responsible, he had stated. UNP leader questions Lakshman Seneviratne
UNP Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe at the last UNP parliamentary group meeting had made enquiries from MP Lakshman Seneviratne as to why he had given evidence against DNA Leader MP Sarath Fonseka before the first Court Martial.
The Court Martial stripped the former army commander of his ranks and medals. It also deprived him of his pension rights.
UNP MP Lakshman Seneviratne and Minister Johnston Fernando gave evidence before the Court Martial against MP Fonseka for his alleged involvement in politics while being in uniform.
At the last group meeting Mr. Wickremesinghe had reportedly said that the UNP was embarrassed because of MP Seneviratne giving evidence before the Court Martial. The UNP Leader had apparently questioned Mr. Seneviratne in this regard.
Mr. Seneviratne had reportedly responded saying that he had no other option than giving evidence before the Court Martial.
Last week Mr. Wickremesinghe criticised the Prosecuting Council and the Judge Advocate of the Court Martial in Parliament.
He also denied that MP Fonseka was engaged in politics with the UNP while being in uniform as the Chief of Defence Staff at that time.
The DNA is expected to file an appeal in the Appeal Court shortly against the first Court Martial decision.(Daily Mirror)

India will raise the issue of the proposed increase of visa fees with US President Barack Obama during his visit to the country in November, Minister of State for External Affairs Preneet Kaur said on Sunday.
"India has already conveyed its concern to the US and the Prime Minister will also take up this matter with President Barack Obama during his visit in November to India," Kaur told reporters in New Delhi.
Pointing out that the US government was still thinking about its implementation, she said "let's be hopeful that some positive will come after deliberations between two head of states in November."
There is resentment among Indian IT firms over US' move to hike H-1B and L-1 visa fees. The hike in the visa fees to fund new measures would result in Indian IT companies having to shell out up to $250 million annually on visa costs, industry experts have said. The proposed increase in visa application fee by at least $2,000 for next five years would raise nearly $550 million out of $650 million that have been allocated for increasing the security of the US-Mexico border.
The minister was asked about concerns voiced by countries including New Zealand regarding participation in the Delhi Commonwealth Games. "When it is a high-profile event, the threat perception is always there and it is better to be alert," the minister said adding, "we will provide fool-proof security to all the players and officials."

But the MJA said with an “independent media regulatory board named Media Council” in place there is “no authority for the government or MDP to regulate media.”
The MJA argued that Manik is trying to assume the role of a media watchdog, and instead urged him to respect the due process.
The association condemning his statement as an attempt to “violate free media”Previously, Manik interrupted the work Zeena Zahir, a video journalist of VTV, while she was working near the committee room 2 of the parliament building, asking her to leave the area.
Zeena was working there with Parliament’s permission.
“He has also repeatedly threatened journalists and media organisations addressing at MDP rallies, inciting public hatred against journalism,” the MJA said.

இந்த திட்டத்தின் முதற் கட்டத்திற்கென 250 மில்லியன் ரூபாய் நிதியை நன் கொடையாக வழங்க இந்திய அரசாங்கம் முன்வந்துள்ளதாக சிறுவர் மேம்பாட்டு, மற்றும் மகளிர் விவகார பிரதியமைச்சர் எம். எல். ஏ. எம். ஹிஸ்புல்லாஹ் தெரிவித்தார்.

Though stone tools were discovered about two million years ago, anthropologists say they were used to tear off meat from carcasses rather than for hunting. The first signs of systematic hunting appear around 50,000 years ago.
In the early Christian church of the first century, there was a group of Christian vegetarians. Rom. 14: 1-4 St. Paul considered them "weak in faith" but treated them with due respect.
John Wesley, the human founder of the Methodist Church, was a vegetarian. He once wrote to the Bishop of London: "Thanks be to God since the time I gave up the use of flesh meals and wine, I have been delivered from all physical ills."
The Rev. William Booth, one of the greatest followers of Wesley, who later became the Founder and first General of the Salvation Army, was a strict vegetarian.

Australian PM asks independents to save government

CANBERRA, Australia (AP) - Prime Minister Julia Gillard said she started negotiating with independent lawmakers Sunday in a bid to cling to power because no major party won a majority of parliamentary seats in Australia’s general elections.
Gillard said she hoped to enlist support for her center-left Labor Party and has held preliminary talks with three independents in the House of Representatives, an independent candidate whose seat is not yet assured and a lawmaker from the Greens party.
Both the center-left Labor, which had ruled for the past three years, and the conservative Liberal Party-led coalition opposition have conceded that neither is likely to claim the 76 seats needed to form government in the 150-seat House of Representatives.
"It is clear that neither party has earned the right to government in its own right," Gillard told reporters. "It’s my intention to negotiate in good faith an effective agreement to form government."
But Liberal leader Tony Abbott said the loss of voter support for Labor that cost the government so many of its 83 seats showed that Australians wanted the government to change.
While Abbott did not rule out winning the election, he confirmed that he also had preliminary discussions with the independents and Greens.
"It is historically unprecedented for a first-term government to receive the kind of rebuff that the ... government received yesterday," Abbott told reporters. "It’s certain that any Labor government emerging from yesterday will be chronically divided and dysfunctional," he added.
Independent Tony Windsor said he planned to talk with fellow independents Bob Katter and Rob Oakeshott by telephone on Sunday to decide on issues including whether to negotiate a power deal with the major parties as a group or individually.
All three were the only independents in the last parliament and all are former members of the Nationals party, which is a coalition partner of the Liberals. But all have said they are open to the prospect of supporting a Labor minority government.
"Whichever side it is, we need to have some stability and maintenance of stability so that the government can actually work," Windsor told Australian Broadcasting Corp. television.
"We might end up back at the polls," he added, referring to the possibility of another election if a support pact cannot be negotiated.
All three independents have made a key issue of boosting the poor telecommunications services in rural Australia.
Labor had gone to the polls promising a 43 billion Australian dollar ($38 billion) high-speed optical fiber national broadband network. The Liberals had promised a smaller, slower AU$6 billion network using a range of technologies including optical fiber, wireless and DSL.
Greens party leader Bob Brown said no agreement had been reached after a "cordial" conversation with Gillard, who was seeking the support of newly elected Greens lawmaker Adam Brandt. But Brandt had previously stated his preference for a Labor government.
The Greens won a surge of support from former Labor voters after Labor shelved plans to charge major polluting industries for every ton of carbon gas that they emit in a bid to curb Australia’s greenhouse gas emissions. The record support for the Greens has increased the party’s senate seats from five to nine, giving them the leverage to become kingmaker in deciding which major party controls that chamber.

"It is historically unprecedented for a first-term government to receive the kind of rebuff that the ... government received yesterday," Abbott told reporters. "It’s certain that any Labor government emerging from yesterday will be chronically divided and dysfunctional," he added.
Independent Tony Windsor said he planned to talk with fellow independents Bob Katter and Rob Oakeshott by telephone on Sunday to decide on issues including whether to negotiate a power deal with the major parties as a group or individually.
All three were the only independents in the last parliament and all are former members of the Nationals party, which is a coalition partner of the Liberals. But all have said they are open to the prospect of supporting a Labor minority government.
"Whichever side it is, we need to have some stability and maintenance of stability so that the government can actually work," Windsor told Australian Broadcasting Corp. television.
"We might end up back at the polls," he added, referring to the possibility of another election if a support pact cannot be negotiated.
All three independents have made a key issue of boosting the poor telecommunications services in rural Australia.
Labor had gone to the polls promising a 43 billion Australian dollar ($38 billion) high-speed optical fiber national broadband network. The Liberals had promised a smaller, slower AU$6 billion network using a range of technologies including optical fiber, wireless and DSL.
Greens party leader Bob Brown said no agreement had been reached after a "cordial" conversation with Gillard, who was seeking the support of newly elected Greens lawmaker Adam Brandt. But Brandt had previously stated his preference for a Labor government.
The Greens won a surge of support from former Labor voters after Labor shelved plans to charge major polluting industries for every ton of carbon gas that they emit in a bid to curb Australia’s greenhouse gas emissions. The record support for the Greens has increased the party’s senate seats from five to nine, giving them the leverage to become kingmaker in deciding which major party controls that chamber.
Combining bad economics with proto-geography
The World Bank has released a new report on Sri Lanka. The title, Sri Lanka: Connecting People to Prosperity, sounds very attractive. Looking at the title of the report, one may wonder if the report professes something different from making people prosper since one may connect people to prosperity but at the same time leaving them as poor as they were before. The Report has revealed, using three dimensional maps, that 17 per cent of Sri Lanka’s poor people (421,000), in fact, live closer to ‘the mountain of prosperity’, i.e., in the Western Province. Figure 1 shows that density of poor people and the mountain of prosperity have close association. In other words more poor people live in and around the prosperous areas. Of course, as the report has explicated both ‘pull’ and ‘push’ factors have been in operation compelling the poor to migrate internally to prosperous areas in anticipation of a better way of life. And it is much easier for them to do so. The presence of slums and shanties in the middle and outskirts of big cities in the developing countries may be attributed to these dynamics; the process David Harvey pained as the primitive capital accumulation by dispossession. This process is somewhat similar to the process what Jayati Ghosh described in another context. She wrote: "But it is a darker process, often more perverse and painful, always more fraught and fragile, indicating in depressing ways the continuing failures of our development projects and how little we have actually achieved for most of our citizens. Funds amount to Rs 7,410 million :
The People’s Republic of China (PRC) will grant Rs 7,410 million to the Government to develop all State hospitals in the Northern and Eastern Provinces. The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the two countries recently, a Health Ministry spokesman said.
According to the spokesman, Health Ministry Secretary Dr Ravindra Ruberu and CETC (China Electronics Technology Group Corporation) International, China, Chairman Yan Lijin signed the MoU last week. The Ministry will use these fund to develop all State hospitals located in the North and East. New building complexes will be constructed and the existing complexes will be rehabilitated.
North and East hospitals will be given modern medical equipment, ICUs, OPDs, Theatres, Emergency Care Units, medical laboratories and all the other facilities available in other State hospitals.
The State hospitals in these provinces were destroyed due to terrorism and the Ministry was unable to rehabilitate and develop them due to the 30 year-old war in the region.
CETC Chairman Yan Lijin said Sri Lanka is heading towards a new era under President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s leadership.
The Chinese Government will extend their fullest support towards Sri Lanka’s development.

The government is prepared to order NGO’s who are linked with funding the LTTE, to shut down and have their officials deported, Prime Minister D. M. Jayaratna told Daily Mirror online.Prime Minister Jayaratna said that the government has identified NGOs who have provided finance, fire arms and advice to the LTTE and have taken measures to cancel their licenses.With regard to accusations that the government was not permitting NGOs to visit mined and resettled areas in the North, the Prime Minister stated that if an NGO official is injured while visiting mined areas, the government would have to take the responsibility. Therefore the Government has decided to permit visits only after de-mining is completed and will not succumb to pressure from the international community, Prime Minister Jayaratna added. And to date, I still respect the First Lady, Madam Rajapakse. She is a very good lady but most of all she is a very good mother to her three sons. I adore her and will always respect her. A Cardinal from Vatican is scheduled to visit Sri Lanka on August 27th to make relevant inquiries into Archbishop Malcolm Ranjith who has been nominated for a cardinalship by the Vatican.Bishops around the country are due to meet the Cardinal during his stay as part of the inquiry process, the Archbishop's house told Daily Mirror online.Only on one instance has a Sri Lankan being presented with a cardinalship before. At 59th Annual SLFP Convention
The proposed Constitutional Reforms and many other crucial resolutions are expected to be taken up for discussion at the 59th Annual Convention of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) to be held at Temple Trees on September 2 commencing at 9.30 am , the Presidential Secretariat said yesterday .
President Mahinda Rajapaksa, as the head of the SLFP — the main constituent party of the United Peoples Freedom Alliance (UPFA) — will preside.
Leaders and senior representatives of constituent parties in the UPFA government are expected to participate in the forthcoming convention, party sources said
With SLFP General Secretary Minister Maithripala Sirisena away from the country till August 25, when SLFP Administrative Secretary S. H. Ariyasena was contacted, he confirmed this year’s annual party convention would take center stage with President Rajapaksa assuming his second term of office on November 18, 2010.
The President is scheduled to take up for review the past progress of the UPFA Government and brief the 8000 to 9000 members of the party rank and file invited for the convention on the sacrifices that have to be made on behalf of the country if the constitutional reforms are to be taken forward successfully, the sources said.
Another matter to be taken up for discussion is the arrangements to be made by the Chairman of the S. W. R. D. Commemoration Committee and the party’s Vice President Seyedu Alavi Mowlana, to commemorate the 52nd death anniversary of the founder leader of the SLFP on September 26.

Sri Lanka came into the game needing to win to stay alive in the tournament. Their captain had made some prickly comments - "We don't try and hide behind the press or hide behind our board" - on the eve of the game. One of their players was coming back from a ban and another had lost his match fee the previous time these two teams faced. One expected this game to be spicy. One anticipated some heat in the middle. One thought there would be a great fight. However, India succumbed so meekly that Sri Lanka waltzed through to the tri-series final without breaking into a sweat. India, after slipping to their worst defeat in terms of balls remaining, face New Zealand on Wednesday in a knockout.
The Sri Lankan seamers, led by Thisara Perera, owned the first half of the game as India were shot out for 103. What stood out was Sri Lanka's discipline in executing their plan to perfection. What surprised you was how easily India fell into the individual traps. And the chase was over in a blink.

Far too often these days, Dinesh Karthik's plan to tackle the moving ball, while opening, has been too one-dimensional: He walks down the track in an effort to make the bowler change the length.
