4 surrender over assault on Matara tax officer

Four persons have surrendered to courts over the recent assault of the head of Inland Revenue office in Matara.They gave themselves up, through a lawyer, to the Matara chief magistrate today (Aug. 23) and were remanded until September 09.Police are searching for a close associate of a politician of the area in connection with the assault.Tax officers are staying away from field duties to protest the manhandling of deputy tax commissioner H.M. Denzil on August 11.A large police contingent is in Matara at present to arrest those responsible for the attack.Police chief Mahinda Balasuriya is also in the area giving instructions to his officers.(Combo Today)
