Students made to suffer for Invigilators’ error – DNA

A group of candidates who sat the GCE Advanced Level exam in Ratnapura yesterday were kept "under arrest" due to a fault of the exam hall authorities, Parliament was told yesterday.
DNA MP Anura Kumara Dissanayake told Parliament that the invigilators and other officials had by mistake distributed in the morning the English question paper (II) scheduled for the afternoon instead of paper (I).
Later they came to know of their mistake and did not allow candidates to go out of the exam hall during the lunch break and ordered that they sit for the English paper (I) too to avoid the leaking of questions.
That had happened at a leading school in Ratnapura and the candidates had not been allowed to have their lunch or go to the toilet, he said.
Education Minister Bandula Gunawardena said that the examination authorities were humans and it was the nature of humans to err.
The examination authorities had taken appropriate action to prevent the contents of the paper leaking, he said.
MP Dissanayake: Is keeping children under house arrest without allowing them to go to toilet the most ideal action?
Minister Gunawardena said that there was nothing else to be done in such a situation and promised he would look into the matter. (News-The Island)

Raids on 768 illegal gem mines

The National Gem and Jewellery Authority (NGJA) has earned an income of Rs 8.3 million by conducting 768 islandwide raids against illegal gem mining in 2009, Parliament was told yesterday. Environment Minister Anura Priyadarshana Yapa revealed this in response to an oral question raised by UPFA MP YG Padmasiri.
Minister Yapa further said that the total income generated through the export of gems and jewellery was Rs 45,431 million in 2009.
"It is a decrease in the overall income compared to the previous year. The economic downturn that prevailed in the United States who is the principal buyer of Sri Lankan gems, had caused the decrease in demand for Sri Lankan gems."
He said the NGJA has focused on new gems and jewellery markets in China, Russia and India to promote local gems and jewellery as a result of the decrease in export demand for gems in the United States of America.
The "Sri Lanka forum" was organised at three international gems and jewellery trade fairs held in 2009 with support from the Sri Lankan Embassy in China and Sri Lanka Gems and Jewellery Association enabling 107 exporters to present their exhibits and gain access to the market there. In addition, the Sri Lanka Forum was held at International Exhibitions in Japan and America in 2009.
The Sri Lanka Forum was organised for the 18th time at the Hong Kong Gems and Jewellery Exhibition, which is a leading jewellery exhibition Hold in Hong Kong. At the same time the "Sri Lanka Forum" was organised at the international trade fairs held in India and Singapore, where a lucrative business has evolved for Sri Lankan gems and jewellery. These measures will improve the country's agricultural sector and expand employment opportunities, he said.
Prime Minister Jayaratne said although 233 million litres of milk were domestically produced in 2009, 620,350 metric tons of milk powder was imported which cost the country nearly Rs 19 billion.
The Mahinda Chintana program is continuously supporting the development of local industries therefore the task of improving the production sector is made easier under President Mahinda Rajapaksa's leadership, he said. (News-Daily News)
