At 59th Annual SLFP Convention

The proposed Constitutional Reforms and many other crucial resolutions are expected to be taken up for discussion at the 59th Annual Convention of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) to be held at Temple Trees on September 2 commencing at 9.30 am , the Presidential Secretariat said yesterday .
President Mahinda Rajapaksa, as the head of the SLFP — the main constituent party of the United Peoples Freedom Alliance (UPFA) — will preside.
Leaders and senior representatives of constituent parties in the UPFA government are expected to participate in the forthcoming convention, party sources said
With SLFP General Secretary Minister Maithripala Sirisena away from the country till August 25, when SLFP Administrative Secretary S. H. Ariyasena was contacted, he confirmed this year’s annual party convention would take center stage with President Rajapaksa assuming his second term of office on November 18, 2010.
The President is scheduled to take up for review the past progress of the UPFA Government and brief the 8000 to 9000 members of the party rank and file invited for the convention on the sacrifices that have to be made on behalf of the country if the constitutional reforms are to be taken forward successfully, the sources said.
Another matter to be taken up for discussion is the arrangements to be made by the Chairman of the S. W. R. D. Commemoration Committee and the party’s Vice President Seyedu Alavi Mowlana, to commemorate the 52nd death anniversary of the founder leader of the SLFP on September 26.
Any changes to the Executive Presidency, Electoral Reforms to Local Government, the proposed Constitutional Reforms and the forthcoming Local Elections are some of the crucial matters expected to be taken up for discussion , party sources said.(Island)
